Madame Web 2024 swung into cinemas with high expectations, promised to be a refreshing detour from the usual beats of superhero flicks. Touted to be a tale of foresight and fate, it twists the norm by focusing on a less-celebrated Marvel maven, played by Dakota Johnson. But instead of web-slinging its way to success, the film gets caught in its own narrative snags.
The rather ambitious project receives a mere 3 out of 10, largely because it fails to weave the thrilling tapestry it promised. The elements were all there—a stellar cast, a unique character with complex powers, and the sprawling backdrop of Manhattan. Yet, what should have been a compelling origin story ends up feeling more like a misfire than a bullseye.
For starters, the script lacks the cohesion and sharpness needed to pull viewers into Cassandra Webb's psychic world. We're introduced to a riveting heroine—a paramedic with precognitive abilities. Yet, the movie stumbles around her backstory and uses heavy-handed flashbacks and reveals that leave you more confused than intrigued.
The film's pacing doesn't do it any favors either. There's a sense of dragging through scenes that should have been tense or exciting. Instead of being on the edge of your seat, you may find yourself checking your watch, wondering when the real action will start.
Beyond these narrative woes, the budget allocation is a puzzle. With the resources at their disposal, it's baffling how the end result seems to lack the polish and pizzazz one associates with a Marvel production. The special effects and set pieces that could have brought Madame Web's abilities to astonishing life fall flat, making you wonder where all the money went.
Despite Johnson’s best efforts, she's not given enough to work with to truly shine or elevate the material. She, along with the promising ensemble of characters who are set to have "powerful destinies," are bogged down by a script that never finds its footing.
In a nutshell, Madame Web tangled itself up in a web of poor writing, lethargic pacing, and ineffective use of its budget. Instead of a thrilling excursion into the psychic domain, audiences are left with a lackluster experience. It's a massive waste of potential and time—a disappointing chapter in the superhero saga that could have been so much more. Madame Web is not the origin story we hoped for but rather a gigantic mess that we're left to untangle.
